1. Background. =20
For centuries service men and women have answered the =
call of=20
duty in national defense. =
Nothing=20
so solemnly affirms one=92s commitment to that duty better than the =
enlistment=20
oath of office. Raising =
one=92s right=20
hand, swearing/affirming personal devotion to defending the Constitution =
of the=20
United States, pledging faith and allegiance to that same document, =
taking on=20
this incredible burden by sacrificing one=92s livelihood and potentially =
one=92s=20
life freely, without mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and =
promising to=20
perform one=92s duties to the best of one=92s abilities with one=92s =
moral conscience=20
as a guide while under the watchful eye of the deity, means much more =
than just=20
signing a job employment application. =20
During a reenlistment ceremony, the reenlisting Sailor makes a =
personal=20
commitment in a public forum to wear the cloth of the nation with =
honor,=20
courage, and commitment.
2. Policy
a. Reenlistment is a significant =
event in=20
the career of an enlisted member. =20
As such, it should be accorded a meaningful ceremony to recognize =
the=20
member=92s high-quality performance, as indicated by the recommendation =
for=20
reenlistment. Therefore,=20
reenlistment ceremonies are to be =
conducted in=20
a dignified manner that appropriately reflects the importance of the =
oath that=20
the Sailor is taking. =
This includes=20
the participants wearing the proper uniform and conducting themselves in =
an=20
appropriate manner.
b. The commanding officer (CO) =
or, in=20
his/her absence, the executive officer (XO) should=20
preside.
c. Per reference (a), the =
President, the=20
Vice-President, the Secretary of Defense, any commissioned officer, and =
any=20
other person designated under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of =
Defense=20
may administer the reenlistment oath.
3. Responsibility. All hands, superiors and =
subordinates,=20
should ensure reenlistment ceremonies are conducted in a meaningful and=20
professionally appropriate manner. =20
Each reenlistment shall be performed in uniform and should be =
memorable=20
with the right tone and venue to reflect pride, professionalism, =
respect, and=20
dignity for the oath and the United States Navy. =20
The=20
CO should follow the additional procedures listed below, as=20
appropriate.

soon as=20
possible following the =
reenlistment.

the occasion with other recognition, as=20
appropriate.

Since=20
all payments are processed electronically, present, if desired, a=20
ceremonial reenlistment bonus (dummy) check, if one is=20
due.
